NSA-NYC ONLINE NEWSLETTER
Published Quarterly
SPRING 2004
New York City Chapter of the National Speakers Association

Dear NSA-NYC Friends,
Since 1996, I have been a member of NSA-NYC . About three years ago I felt the personal need to have more communication with chapter members in between our monthly meetings. The board at that time agreed that this would be of benefit to everyone. Thus was born the NSA-NYC Online Quarterly Newsletter.

Thanks to the contributions of all of you, the newsletter has been successful in letting the board communicate with chapter members, and chapter members with each other. We have been able to cheer each other's accomplishments and help each other grow as professionals.

One of the Musical Keynote programs that I do is called "The Joys and Challenges of Change: Whether You Choose It or It Chooses You!" Well, I've chosen to step down as editor of the newsletter. I'm leaving while I'm still having a wonderful time doing it.

I also know that our President-Elect, Bob Frare has new ideas for what the newsletter will be in the future. This will be an opportunity for other NSA-NYC members to be involved putting together this new publication, whatever form it will take.

I hope to remain active in our chapter. So, I'll be seeing you at our meetings and in Phoenix this summer. Thank you all for making my job a joy.

Love,
Dottie Burman

1. LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MARY BRYANT

Spring is a time to blossom, and given the dedication and effort we planted this past fall and winter, we should all be ready for a full bloom! We've been "Polishing the Professionals" during my term and it's been amazing to see how bright we can shine! OK, enough of the mushy talk. How's business? Are you applying the techniques we've been learning at FAST TRACK and our monthly meetings? If you're a member or affiliate, have you updated your website directory listing yet? Several of the members have already reported leads from their listings. How are you marketing yourself as an expert, so that your referrals increase? For me, I've found that being active on the NYTS board and being in a leadership role has significantly impacted my business in a positive way. I'm busier than ever, and just love the feedback I'm getting from clients. No matter how good we already are, I'm convinced there's ALWAYS room for improvement. Keep that in mind as the nomination committee prepares the 2004-2005 slate of officers for your vote in May. MARK YOUR CALENDAR for June 19th, our Award Dinner Gala, where we recognize the amazing work of our board, it's committees, and welcome your new leadership team!

Ron Karr has blown us away with the intensity of FAST TRACK... now we've got Regina Clark at the helm of Speakers University on April 17th! You'll only know how much it will help your business if you attend, participate and apply what you learn! See you at our next monthly meeting with Victoria Labalme - at the New Yorker Hotel on Wednesday evening, March 24th.

Jan also needs volunteers to help with registration on-site at Speakers University.

Regina Clark is looking for volunteers to help with Speakers University. Reminder - a volunteer is someone who is willing to DO something, not someone that tells others what to do. If you are willing to DO something, please call Regina today at 845-294-7089.

SUBMIT YOUR ARTICLES FOR THE NSA-NYC WEBSITE

Do you have an article you'd like to see on our website? Here are the guidelines as posted by Don Gabor, the articles editor. You'll find these guidelines on the right hand side of the homepage. Send articles and inquries to don@dongabor.com

These guidelines are intended to help save time and create polished articles for the NSA website. Please read and follow these suggestions. Submit articles that are:
  • Pre-approved by the on-line editor based on a one-page query letter or prior telephone conversation. Submit queries via email in attached files in MS Word. If you are using a MAC, first name and save your file with a .doc extension (salestips.doc). Then attach it to your email.
  • Edited and proofread (preferably by a professional editor) for grammar, sense, and clarity.
  • Doubled-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point with one-inch margins.
  • No longer than 3 pages, or about 1200-1500 words.
  • Packed with useful information and specific examples for speakers.
  • Titled to reveal the benefits to the readers.
Triple-check your articles for:
  • Awkward or confusing language and jargon
  • Grammatical correctness
  • Correct numbering of points
  • Accurate quotes with attributions
  • Correct spelling of all names and companies
  • Correct dates and contact information
Please do not submit articles that are:
  • First drafts (No "slop-jobs" please!)
  • Rambling stories or long, personal anecdotes
  • Blatant self-promotional full of hype
I highly recommend reading "The Elements of Style" by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White. This little book (72 pages; $7.95) is the best reference a writer can have for usage, composition, commonly misused words and expressions, and approaches to style.

I'm looking forward to reading your articles for the NSA website.
Don Gabor

[Editor's note: To give you an idea of what Don is looking for, here is a peek at an article to be published on our site written by Jeff Cohen with Don Gabor.]

Both Sides of the NSA Member Experience: The Seasoned Veteran versus the Rookie

By Jeff Cohen, featuring an interview with Don Gabor

Two NSA members, one since 1991, the other a first-year attendee, sit adjacent at Fast Track and monthly NSA meetings. Despite differences in our experience, subject matter, and product lines, Don Gabor and I are witnessing the same speakers, networking activities, and Fast Track workshops.

As an NSA rookie, I set out to interview Don to get inside the head of a seasoned veteran and understand the similarities and differences between an experienced member versus someone just beginning the journey toward professional speaker.
